Hmm... Poetry is sometimes a difficult topic. As we read poetry we each decode what we are reading and make decisions about the meaning of the poem. Poetry is not written to be straight forward, you are suppose to dissect it and discover the meaning. So what happens when two people get a different meaning? It happened this week and each person had a whole different understanding of the poem. I mean I think poems have an ultimate meaning. I don't think you can just make it up for yourself. So where do you go from there?
I agree with you that poetry is difficult to understand. It is so easy to understand it wrong and I have a hard time with it as well. That is probably why I never have really enjoyed poetry. I think like you said you just have to dissect the piece of work to gain understanding of what is meant. Each word is very important. I had the generalist role this week and while picking out terms that might cause confusion, it is amazing how a word can mean something completely different than it is quickly interpreted.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wonder if all parts are even meant to be understood. I like to think of it as a mix of all types of art and you an appreciate good poetry because of its connecting of form, function, and flow.
